The more I think about the economy, the more I think about what kind of companies will survive this recession, depression or whatever is coming our way.
The answer is companies that are:
Capable of making a profit.
Companies that have cash on their balance sheet to sustain decreased revenue.
That is why today I want to talk about….
Facts:
Calendly is a software tool that helps you schedule meetings without the back-and-forth emails.
Started in early 2013 by Tope Awotona.
They have raised Seed funding from Atlanta Tech Village.
They have 120 employees as of March 2020.
Why I Like:
Work from Home has arrived!
If you’re a non essential worker you’re probably reading this from home right now.
At least in NJ (where I am), everyone is working from home or not working.
This won’t last forever but it will create a new workflow for a lot of people.
People that were not able to work from home before will now expect to work from home.
Managers that didn’t allow work from home before will see the error in their ways.
This will all benefit Calendly!
Calendly is not exclusively a work from home product but its great for people working from home.
Its ease of scheduling between multiple parties will be even more beneficial as more people are not in the office.
The same way we have seen Zoom increase in usage over the past few months is the same way Calendly will increase.
As I mentioned at the beginning of this email, Calendly is profitable.
This is a big deal, especially right now!
Many startup are not profitable and if you’re not profitable when money stops coming in that is a big problem.
I understand the idea of growth, that is what most start ups are focused on.
The problem is when revenue decreases that business model no longer works, everything breaks.
This is why we’re seeing so many companies have HUGE layoffs right now.
I don’t predict to see this with Calendly, on the contrary, I think they will continue to grow.
This is the perfect time to join Calendly
Let’s be honest, a lot of start ups are going to close their doors during this time but the startups that can last will be integral in our world.
When you look at the Fortune 500 more than 50% of them were founded during a recession.
Calendly wasn’t founded during a recession nor do I think its going to be a Fortune 500 company in the future but I believe this time will prove to be great for Calendly.
As stated before, they are perfect for the work from home culture we live in today, they are profitable and lastly, they’re not too large of a company.
As of March 2020, Calendly has 120 employees. This is a great time to join a company.
I am not sure what Calendly’s exit strategy is but eventually their investors will want to their money back.
Does that mean they one day go public? Possibly.
Does that mean they one day get acquired? Possibly.
What it means for sure is whoever owns a portion of the company has a chance to make a chunk of change on the exit.
Here’s what I would do:
Go check out Calendly’s open jobs.
Calendly Open Jobs
If there are any jobs you like, as always, I would recommend going directly to the source.
In this case the hiring contact is Kelly Minella.
She is the head of recruiting, her email is
kelly@calendly.com
Kelly is she is a part of recruiting. Their job is to get candidates in the door but she is not the final decision make for these roles. I would also reach out to the decision maker.
An example of this is, they are hiring a Principal Product manager.
I would reach out to who you think would be manager of that person.
A possibility could be.
I would use this information to email him.
Oji@calendly.com
Also, don’t forget to follow up.
If you apply then email and they don’t reply don’t worry about it.
Follow up on your email!
People say to me “I don’t want to be thirsty!”
This isn’t dating, a little persistence goes a long way (in dating too honestly but thats a lesson for another day).
One lesson from dating though, be persistent but don’t be a creep.
If you really like this company don’t wait until you see a position you want to apply to.
Message a few people on the team now.
Follow them on LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.
You know the old saying, “Its all about who you know”?
This is a way to start getting to know the right people!
Ok, thats it for now. I hope you enjoyed this.
Stay safe and continue to wash your hands.
Oh yea, and share this with a friend 😁
